Tolerance

The notion of 'tolerance' has become something of an ethical edict in our society. However, such an ambiguous and abstract term allows multiple interpretations and fosters misunderstanding in our American society and in the world community. We preach tolerance which stands for "putting up with others" in the face of our differences and disagreements. This form of tolerance says, "I respect your difference, but you are wrong... (and usually, when religion is involved)... you are going to hell." There has been no real effort at understanding the difference and no real possibility of seeing the validity of the other's point of view or way of life.

We must move beyond simply "putting up with others" or, as often happens as a result of our false tolerance, covertly forcing an unjustified assimilation on those of difference.

We must find ways past the apparent contradictions; for true success in life lies in our ability to live into paradox...
